Letter to Self

What:

Letter to Self

Why:

One of the best ways to remind yourself why you committed yourself to practice mindfulness and other mind-training tools is to write a letter to your future self.

How:

The exercise is simple: write a letter, put it in an envelope, address it to yourself, keep it somewhere safe. Put a reminder in your calendar in about 3 – 6 months (you choose) and say: open letter. Find the letter and read it.

When you sit down to write the letter you can once again take a moment or two to ground yourself and be present and aware of what is going on for you right now, and focussing in on your breathing for a couple of breaths.

Once you feel grounded and present, ask yourself what advice you would give your future self, given all the learning you have done over the last 6 weeks. Write this down in your letter, take your time, let it sit for a while and then write anything else that comes to your mind.

Tip:

Don’t forget to keep the letter in a safe space, and to open it at some point in time, and then to take your own advice to heart!
