Bursting your thoughts

When we feel overwhelmed, we have thoughts that keep coming back over and over again. These are usually thoughts that make us fearful and are interpretation of things that are happening (the event!).

These thoughts are not very fun, and can make us feel worse if we get stuck in them. We often give a lot of power to our thoughts, believing all of them. But thoughts are not facts. You can also think of a herd of green elephants. Does not make a herd of green elephants true.

Catching our thoughts and treating them lightly, not as facts, can help diffuse their power.

Follow these steps:

  1. Identify the recurring thoughts.
  2. Give the thought a pet name (with some love and humour).
  3. Make a note of how many times you catch yourself thinking this (during meditation and during the day!)
